BDR carnage case appeal verdict handed to Bangla Academy

Supreme Court (SC) administration on Tuesday handed over a copy of the BDR carnage case appeal verdict written in Bengali to Bangla Academy.

High Court Division special officer Md Saifur Rahman and Deputy Registrar (General and Original Jurisdiction) Md Abdur Rahman handed over the copy of the verdict to director general of Bangla Academy Habibullah Sirajee.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court administration handed over a copy of the 2017 verdict to International Mother Language Institute.

The High Court on November 27, 2017, upheld death penalty for 139 rogue soldiers out of 151 for staging the barbaric 2009 carnage at Pilkhaana headquarters of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in the capital.

The concerned trial court in its 2013 judgment originally sentenced 152 mutineers to death. One of them died a natural death subsequently, while it handed down life term to 160.

The High Court in its appeal verdict commuted the death sentence of eight to life imprisonment and acquitted four of the charges. The court also upheld life imprisonment for 146 out of the total 160 people, who were convicted by the third additional metropolitan sessions’ judge court on November 5, 2013.
