Ishraque’s personal secretary arrested over AL-BNP clash at Gopibagh

Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested another person in connection with Sunday’s (January 26) clash that took place between activists of Awami League (AL) and BNP during an election campaigning in the capital’s Gopibagh.

The arrestee was identified as Ariful Islam, an activist of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed this to media on Thursday morning.
“Ariful Islam was arrested from the capital’s Hatirjheel area on Wednesday. An illegal firearm and 50 bullets were recovered from his possession during the drive,” he said.

DB sources said detainee Ariful Islam is a supporter of BNP and a personal secretary of BNP nominated mayor candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation Ishraque Hossain.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, supporters of BNP’s mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain engaged in a clash with AL activists during electioneering in Gopibagh area.

The clash that lasted for around 30 minutes left a dozen of people, including a photojournalist of Somoy Television, injured.

Following this on the same night, Maksud Ahmed, a leader of Gopibagh Ward unit of the ruling party, filed a lawsuit against 50 BNP activists over the clash, which left 15 people of the both sides injured.

Law enforcers arrested five people in the case filed over the clash. The arrestees are: Jamil Ahmed Tuhin, Billal Hossain, Sohel, Faruk and Akram Hossain Munna.

Later, they were produced before a Dhaka court and placed on a one-day remand each in the case file with Wari Police Station over the clash by local AL leader Maksud Ahmed.
