SA games: Dipu bags first gold for Bangladesh

Shawdes Desk: Dipu Chakma secured the first gold medal for the country in the ongoing 13th South Asian Games as he won the taekwondo poomsae event 29-plus-year category at Satdobato in Lalitpur of Nepal on Monday.

Dipu, hailing from Rangamati, scored 16.24 points, beating opponents from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Nepal to bag the gold medal.

Sri Lanka’s Lakshman IIandarige won silver with 8.22 points to his name while India’s Gangphung Gangsa won the bronze with 8.14 points.
Earlier, Bangladesh won the first medal when Humayra Akter won Bronze in the Women’s Single Karate event. In that event, Pakistan won the Gold and Nepal secured Silver.

Humayra has been playing for five years. She won the national championship five times before her first international medal in this year’s SA Games. Humayra passed her HSC this year from Willes Little Flower School.
