A suspected leader of a robber gang was killed in a gunfight with members of police at Bhuigaon area of Dakshin surma union under Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Lakander Ali, 34, son of Kalamder Ali, hailing from Ziapur-Habipur village of Singchapair union of the upazila.

Police claimed that Lakander was a top robber and there are 12 robbery cases against him.

Confirming the news, Mostofa Kamal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chhatak Police Station, said on secrete information a team of law enforcers conducted a drive at the area at 1:30 am.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Lakander and his associates opened fire at police members, forcing them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, he said.

After the gunfight, the police team recovered the body of Lakander from the spot, the OC said.
