Swechchhasebak League, an associate body of the ruling Awami League, is holding a council today in which former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders may get top posts in the new committee.

AL sources said they will put youths with clean image at top posts of Swechchhasebak League.

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the council session at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital at 11:20am.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said the next leadership of the Swechchhasebak League may be picked from former BCL leaders.

“Former BCL leaders, who have honesty and clean image, may get place in the new committee of the Swechchhasebak League,” he added.

The Awami League-led government has declared a crusade against corruption and crimes. In line with it, the ruling party wants ‘transparent’ people to helm its associate bodies.

AL chief Sheikh Hasina has already collected information about Swechchhasebak League’s posts seekers from different intelligences agencies. Family background and financial status of the aspirants will be taken into consideration, sources said.

Former BCL vice-president Afzalur Rahman Babu, joint general secretary Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Shachchu, office secretary Saleh Mohammad Tutul, organising secretaries AKM Azim, Abdul Alim Bepary, Khairul Hasan Jewel, Sheikh Sohel Rana Tipu and Sajjad Sakib Badsha, social welfare secretary Nafiul Karim Nafa, assistant office secretary Azizul Haque Aziz and assistant publications secretary Obaydul Haque Khan are in the good book of the AL chief.

A total of 1,975 councillors and 18,000 delegates are likely to join the council to be attended by around 15,000 guests.

Second session of the council will be held at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in the afternoon.

Councillors will propose names of new president and general secretary who will be finalised after a closed-door negotiation meeting with the candidates.
