Actress Nipun barred from leaving Bangladesh

Actress Nipun Akter was barred from leaving the country by the authorities at the Osmani International Airport Sylhet on Friday.

Nipun, who was scheduled to fly to London on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 10:15am, was briefly detained by the Immigration Police based on directives from intelligence agencies.

After interrogation and scrutinising passport and other documents, her journey was cancelled and she was sent back.

It was learnt that she returned to Dhaka from Sylhet.

Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge Nur-e-Bahar said Nipun’s London trip was cancelled due to the objection raised by intelligence agencies.

However, it is not yet clear why the intelligence bodies objected to her departure from Bangladesh.

The actress came under discussion through the Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association (BFAA) election in 2022.

While vying for the post of general secretary, she was defeated by Zayed Khan in a close contest. After months of legal battle, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court cleared the way for her to serve as the general secretary of the association.

There are allegations that Awami League Presidium member Sheikh Selim exerted his influence to win Nipun in the polls. In 2012, Sheikh Selim inaugurated Nipun’s beauty parlour in Dhaka’s Banani area.

In 2024, Misha Shawdagar was elected the new president of the BFAA for the next two years, while Monowar Hossain Dipjol secured the position of general secretary, defeating Nipun Akter.
