The police arrested former railways minister Nurul Islam Sujan on Monday in connection with a case filed with Jatrabari police station over the killing of student Imran Hossain in the capital during the student-led mass uprising.
He was handed over to Demra police station.
Sujan’s lawyer, Motaher Hossain Saju, told New Age that Sujan had been under police surveillance while receiving treatment at a specialized hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.
Saju also said that he had filed a pre-arrest bail petition on Sujan’s behalf, but the High Court refused to hear the request on Sunday due to Sujan’s absence at the hearing.
The court deferred the bail hearing until Tuesday.
Sujan is one of 295 individuals, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her ex-cabinet members, and several journalists, named in a murder case over the killing of student Imran Hossain at Kutubkhali Bou Bazar in Jatrabari on August 5, the day Hasina’s government fell.
Imran’s mother, Kohinur Akhter, filed the case with Jatrabari police station on September 1.
Several dozen high-profile politicians, former ministers and senior police officials have been arrested till date in connection with the killings of multiple students during the protests between July 16 and August 5.
