Death toll in Gazipur gas cylinder blast rises to 10

Four more victims, who sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder blast at Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur on March 13, have died while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, raising the death toll to 10.

Three, identified as Motaleb, 40, who suffered 95 per cent burns in his body; Rabbi, 13, who suffered 90 per cent burns; and Solaiman, 9, suffering 90 per cent burns, died on Monday morning while johurul Islam, 32, who suffered 58 per cent burns, died on Sunday night.

 

Resident surgeon of the burn institute Tariqul Islam confirmed the news.

He said that 19 victims of the accident were currently undergoing treatment at the institute.

Three victims were discharged from the hospital.

At least 35 people were injured as a cooking gas cylinder exploded at a colony next to Top Star Garment Factory in Telir Chala area at about 5:45pm on March 13.

According to local people and police, a person named Shafiqul Islam built residential shades mainly for apparel workers, next to the Top Star Garment Factory. The gas cylinder started leaking at a house in the colony leading to the explosion from the fire of a clay oven.
