Death toll in Gazipur gas cylinder blast rises to five

Three more victims, who sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder blast in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur on March 13, died from their injuries while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, raising the death toll to five.

Two victims — identified as Mohidul, 25, who suffered 95 per cent burns in his body, and Arif, 40, who suffered 70 per cent burns, died on Sunday morning.

 

Three-year-old Tayeba, who suffered 80 per cent burns, died on Saturday night.

Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery resident surgeon Tariqul Islam said that 24 victims were currently undergoing treatment at the hospital and of them 16 were in a critical condition.

Three of the victims were released from the hospital.

At least 35 people were injured as a cooking gas cylinder exploded at a colony next to Top Star Garment Factory in Telir Chala area at about 5:45pm on March 13.

According to local people and police, a person named Shafiqul Islam built the residential houses, mainly for apparel workers, next to the Top Star Garment Factory. The gas cylinder started leaking at a house in the colony leading to the explosion from the fire of a clay oven.
