Man jailed for life for raping KU student

A Khulna court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case filed for raping a female student of Khulna University in 2023.

Khulna Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Abdus Salam Khan passed the verdict on Wednesday afternoon. The court also fined convict Tk 50,000, in default, to serve one more year in jail

The convict is Rafi Islam, 30, son of Md Zahirul Islam, a resident of Mirpur in Dhaka.

According to the prosecution, Rafi Islam raped a female student of KU several times alluring to marry her.

On June 26, 2022, the convict raped her in a hotel of Khulna city and left the place after torturing her as the victim threatened him that she would take legal action if he refused to marry her.

On January 8 in 2023, the victim filed the case with the court.

As per the directives of the court, police registered the case on January 11 last year.

Sohel Rana, a sub-inspector of Sonadanga Police Station, filed the charge sheet against Rafi on February 22, 2023.
