JaPa to be main opposition if independent MPs fail to form alliance: Law minister

Shawdesh desk:

Law Minister Anisul Huq has said that the Jatiya Party will be recognised as the main opposition party in the parliament if the independent lawmakers are failed to form an alliance.

“If they (independent parliamentarians) think they will all remain separate, then surely the Jatiya Party will get the privilege as it secured 11 seats,” said the law minister while talking to the reports at his ministry office in Dhaka this afternoon.

The law minister clarified that securing 10 percent of seats is required to be officially recognised as an opposition party in the parliament.

However, the law minister did not respond when asked how the Jatiya Party would be considered as the main opposition party in the parliament with only 10 seats.

Responding to another query, Huq said the independent lawmakers can form an alliance if they want.

Independent candidates have secured a total of 62 seats, which is nearly six times the Jatiya Party’s tally of 11 seats.

Awami League is forming the government for the fourth consecutive term with 222 seats that have given the party an absolute majority in the 12th parliament.

The party with the second-largest number of seats in parliament becomes the official opposition and has the authority to appoint a leader of the opposition.
