Entrepreneurs have underscored the need for establishing a dedicated ministry for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enhance the sector’s potential.
They made the call during a seminar titled “Technology for Smart SMEs” organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) at its Auditorium in the city on Saturday.
DCCI President Md Sameer Sattar presided over the function while Managing Director of Tiger Telecommunication presented a keynote paper during the seminar.
“India established a dedicated ministry for SMEs in 1999, but Bangladesh could not do it yet. Additionally, the absence of accurate data on SMEs hampers our ability to work effectively,” Tally Khata CEO Shahadat Khan said, taking part in the seminar.
He also urged the government to start a registration process across the country with a view to bring all the SMEs under an umbrella for its smooth operations.
Another entrepreneur, Suraiya Alam, proprietor of Suraiya Fashions, said that they are denied sufficient support from the existing government agencies to do business
“If there had been a separate ministry, we would be facilitated in running our business more effectively,” she said.
Md. Shamsul Arefin, secretary, Information and Communication Technology Division attended the programme as chief guest, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, former principal coordinator (SDGs) and former principal secretary to the prime minister, joined the event as special guest and Md. Mahbubor Rahman, chairman, Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) was present as guest of honour at the programme.
