Garment workers’ minimum wage in Bangladesh set as Tk 12,500

The wage board formed for fixing the wages of garment workers on Tuesday announced Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for a worker in the sector.

The amount is 56.25 per cent higher than the existing one and the new salary will be effective from December 1.

 

State minister for labour, Monnujan Sufian, formally announced the wage for the garment workers at a press conference in Dhaka.

The minimum wage for garment workers was announced when the sector workers were in movement for pay hike so that they could meet basic needs of their family members.

They have been demanding Tk 23,000 as monthly wage.

The minimum wage for garment workers was earlier formed in 2018 for the last time when  the minimum wage for the workers was set at Tlk 8,000.

The wage board that set Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for the sector workers was formed in April this year.
