The authorities of Rajshahi University on Sunday suspended its medical center’s deputy chief medical officer Razu Ahmmed on charge of harassing a schoolgirl sexually.

The authorities came up with the move after a group of students had taken position in front of the university’s Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Administration Building on Sunday afternoon, demanding removal and exemplary punishment of the physician.

Campus sources said that around four hundred teachers and students, under the banner of RU Teachers’ Association, formed a human chain at the university’s paris road at about 11:00am, demanding immediate removal and exemplary punishment of Razu Ahmmed.

Following the human chain, a group of teachers entered the administrative building to meet the vice-chancellor with their demand while the students took position in front of the main entrance gate.

While the teachers were holding the meeting, the agitating students locked the entrance gate, they said.

Later, the students opened the gate after the university public relation office administrator Professor Pradip Kumar Panday informed them that vice-chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar had suspended physician Razu and decided to form a three-member probe committee to investigate the matter.

Earlier, the mother of a Class VIII female student, also a professor of the university, lodged a written complaint with the university authorities and filed a case with the Boalia police station against Razu Ahmmed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

In the case statement, the professor stated that she took her 13-year-old daughter to Razu’s private chamber at Amana Clinic in Talaimari area in Rajshahi on Monday night as the latter was suffering from a dental problem.

‘I heard a scream of my daughter after I went out of the doctor’s chamber to receive a phone call’, she said, alleging that her daughter informed her that the physician touched her private parts.

Later, two and a half hours after the incident, a group of people stormed into Razu’s chamber and beat him up at about 11:30pm.
