A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Wednesday placed main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist party joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal on a five-day remand in a case filed with Paltan police station.

Metropolitan magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order after Paltan thana police produced him before the court with a 10-day remand petition for interrogation in the violence case.

Opposing the remand petition, defence lawyers submitted a bail petition for Alal but the court rejected the plea after hearing.

Earlier, the Detective Branch of police detained the BNP leader at the Shahidbagh mosque alley in Shahjahanpur in the capital on Tuesday.
