Two killed, 25 injured in Habiganj clash over land dispute

Shawdesh Desk:

Two people were killed and 25 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a land dispute in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj on Saturday night.

The deceased — Ustar Miah, 37, son of Hasan Ali, and his rival Yusuf Ali, 35, son of Cherag Ali — were residents of village Kamargaon under Mirpur union of the upazila.

Police and local people said that there was a longstanding dispute between Ustar and Yusuf over ownership of a piece of land at the village.

Both engaged in clashes several times over the matter earlier.

Their respective groups, on Saturday, got into a clash with locally-made sharp weapons, leaving at least 27 people including the duo injured, they said.

The two men were rushed to Sadar Hospital where physicians declared Ustar and Yusuf dead upon arrival, confirmed assistant superintendent of district police (Bahubal-circle) Abul Khayer.

One of the injured was shifted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment, and the rest were at the Sadar Hospital, the police officer said.

Sadar police station’s officer-in-charge Ajoy Chandra Dev said that they detained four people when the rival groups again clashed at the hospital.

The bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations, he said, adding that no cases had been filed so far.
