HC orders fresh probe as CID drops Narayanganj OC Kamrul

Shawdesh Desk: Annoyed over omitting the name of Narayanganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Kamrul Islam from the charge sheet, the High Court Division on Thursday directed the Criminal Investigation Department to hold fresh investigation in the case of recovery of 50,000 smuggled Yaba tablets at Bandar, Narayanganj on March 7, 2018.

The OC was involved with smuggling the Yaba cache, according to confessional statements made to magistrates by two detained cops.

A bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman reproached the CID for submitting ‘defective and flawed’ charge sheet as it had omitted the name of OC Kamrul.

The bench directed the CID to submit, within two months, a fresh report to the trial court after holding further investigations in the Yaba smuggling case.

The investigation was ‘defective and flawed’ said the court

The bench issued the directive after rejecting applications filed by the three accused police personnel seeking bail on the ground that the name of main accused OC Kamrul had been omitted from the charge sheet.

In February the bench summoned CID inspector Najimuddin Al Azad to personally explain why OC Kamrul was not made accused in the Yaba smuggling case.

The bench had also directed the N’ganj superintendent of police to withdraw OC Kamrul until the investigations were completed by the CID.

But Kamrul was posted as OC of Narayanganj thana immediately after the CID submitted the charge sheet omitting his name.

And during the investigation no other police officer was posted as OC of the Sadar thana.

OC Kamrul’s involvement with Yaba smuggling was revealed Narayanganj Sadar police station assistant sub-inspector Mohammad Alam Sorawardy Rubel and Bandar police station’s constable Asaduzzaman in the confessional statements they had made to magistrates.

On March 7, 2018 ASI Sorawdardi arrested Yaba peddlers- Sabina Akhter Runi of Munshiganj and covered-van helper Abdur Rahman for possessing 50,000 smuggled Yaba Tablets and Tk five lakh in cash at Madanpur bus stand at Bandar in Narayanganj but set them free keeping the Yaba cache the money after bringing them in the Sorawardi’s house on OC Kamrul’s orders, according to their statements recorded by judicial magistrates.

Later at night, the Narayanganj unit of DB raided Sorawdardi’s house and seized the Yaba cache and the cash.

OC Kamrul ordered constable Asaduzzaman to separate 5,000 Yaba tablets from the 50,000 tablets and bring the separated tablets to his house so that he could use them to implicate detained person Johnny in a new Yaba smuggling case, the cops said in their confessional statements to magistrates.
