Six more die as dengue patients keep crowding hospitals

Six more people die of dengue at hospitals in Dhaka, Rajshshi and Rangpur on between Sunday evening and Monday evening as hospitalisation and death caused by the viral infection continued to go unabated across the country.

The deaths took to 93 the death toll from dengue this year although the government confirmed the death of 40 people of dengue.

In Dhaka, Nazma Akhter, 48, hailed from Harang under Chandina in Cumilla and lived at a rented house at Goran in Dhaka, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 1:30pm on Monday, a day after she was admitted to the hospital, DMCH police outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia said.

He said that Nazma was infected by Dengue nine days ago and took treatment at two private hospitals earlier.

At about 5:00am, Akram Hossain, 40, of Matuail-Konabari in Dhaka died of dengue at the hospital, Bachchu said, adding that Akram was admitted to the hospital 5-6 days ago with dengue fever.

Samia, two years and a half, daughter of Md Rubel of Kalibazar in Lakshmipur, who was brought to Dhaka Shishu Hospital from her hometown on August 7 and was diagnosed a dengue patient, died on Monday at about 1:15am, officials at the hospital said.

They said that the baby’s platelet count dropped sharply.

Avijit Saha, 11, son of Mantu Saha and Padma Saha, of Amlapara in Narayanganj city, who was diagnosed a dengue patient at Narayanganj and admitted to Ajgar Ali Hospital at Dhupkhola in Dhaka on August 8, died at the hospital Monday morning, New Age correspondent in Narayanganj reported, quoting the family.

New Age correspondent in Rangpur, quoting Rangpur Medical College Hospital medicine department associate professor AKM Shahaduzzaman, reported that Monirul Islam, 32, of Bagdora under Sadar upazila in Lalmonirhat died of dengue at the hospital Sunday evening, hours after he was admitted to the hospital.

New Age Rajshshi University correspondent, quoting Rajshahi Medical College Hospital physicians, reported that dengue patient Abdul Malek, 25, of Baharam Hausnagar under Sadar upazila in Chapainawabganj died at the hospital Monday afternoon.

They, quoting family, said that the Malek, a mason by profession, used to work in Dhaka and fell sick a week ago after he came to his ancestral home ahead of Eid-ul-Azha .

Besides, the number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals outside Dhaka continues to remain higher than that in Dhaka in past few days while the people from the capital swarmed to villages to celebrate the eid.

1n 24 hours ending Monday 8:00am, DMCH received the highest number of 135 dengue patients and Mugda Medical College Hospital received 119 patients, according to health emergency operations centre and control room data.

In its dengue report on Monday, the Directorate General of Health Services showed in the past 24 hours till 8:00am on Monday, at least 2,093 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country. The number of new patients was 2,334 on Sunday, 2,176 on Saturday and 2,002 on Friday.

On Monday, 1,251 new patients were admitted to hospitals in districts and the number was 1,353 on Sunday, 1,111 on Saturday and 1,055 on Friday.

In Dhaka, the number of new dengue patients admitted to hospitals was 842 on Monday, 981 on Sunday, 1,065 on Saturday and 947 on Friday.

On Monday, at least 8,006 dengue patients were under treatment at hospitals including 4,202 in the capital and 3,804 in the districts.

So far, according to the reports, 43,271 dengue patients were hospitalised this year, including 24,810 in the 12 days of August.
