Mizanur Rahman Shelley passes away

Political analyst, academician and writer Mizanur Rahman Shelley died of brain haemorrhage at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on Monday. He was 76.

Mizanur, also a former minister, was admitted to the hospital on June 25 after he fell ill at his home.

Social scientist and business leader Mizanur Rahman Shelley had been working as a well-known international and national consultant in the fields of socio-economic development, information and public policy, training, education, institutions and public administration, for more than two decades.

His mortal remains are kept at Shamorita Hospital mortuary and will be buried at Azimpur graveyard on Thursday after his son comes from aboard, said his grandson Mahfuz Mizan.

Mizanur was also a seasoned bureaucrat and served both in field and staff positions in governments of Pakistan and Bangladesh. He was the director of the Department of Social Welfare of Bangladesh government. He also acted as chairman of The Bangladesh Times Trust.

Mizanur Rahman Shelley also had special knowledge and expertise in the field of Education. He began his career as a teacher of political science at Dhaka University in 1964. He obtained PhD in international politics from the University of London and the thesis was on the emergence of Bangladesh as a sovereign state.

He also served as a technocrat minister in 1990 in the cabinet of HM Ershad.

Mizanur was also chairman of the Centre for Development Research, Bangladesh, chief advisor of the City University Dhaka, chairman of Premier Leasing International Ltd and chairman of Academic Press, Publishers and Library.
