Malaysian police arrests ex-Bangladesh high commissioner M Khairuzzaman

Shawdesh Desk:

Malaysian immigration police arrested former Bangladesh high commissioner to the country, M Khairuzzaman, from his residence at Ampang area in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday morning.

He has been living there as a refugee for more than a decade.

Confirming the news, Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said he was aware of the arrest of the former diplomat.

“The arrest was made according to procedures,” he said on Thursday.

On the grounds of the arrest, the minister said it was due to “a offence committed and a request by his home country,” he said

Khairuzzaman, a retired army major, was an accused in the 1975 Jail Killing case.

A trial court acquitted him of the charge in 2004.

After the acquittal, he was appointed as ambassador to Myanmar and served there from September 2005 to August 2007. Later, he was made high commissioner to Malaysia.

After taking over the power in early 2009, the Awami League government ordered him to come back home, but assuming risks upon his return, Khairuzzaman obtained the UN Refugee Card in Kuala Lumpur and continued to stay there.
