Dhaka has sought return of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India for shelter on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising, through a diplomatic channel.
‘We have informed the Indian government that she was wanted here for a judicial process. A note verbale has been sent to the Indian external affairs ministry through the diplomatic channel in this regard,’ foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain told reporters at the foreign ministry on Monday afternoon.
Following an inter-ministerial meeting with the advisers of the law ministry and the home affairs ministry earlier this month, the foreign ministry requested its Indian counterpart to send back Sheikh Hasina, now facing an arrest warrant from the International Crimes Tribunal on allegations of committing crimes against humanity during the July-August mass uprising besides dozens of murder cases, said officials concerned.
Hasina, also president of Awami League, has been staying India as the mass uprising forced the fall of her 15-year autocratic regime in August and led to the formation of the interim government led by professor Muhammad Yunus on August 8.
