The prices of broiler chicken and eggs continued to rise on the kitchen markets of the city over the past three weeks while vegetables also became pricey.

Traders said that the wholesale prices of broiler and eggs continued to rise on the market from mid-September after setting the maximum retail prices of the commodities by the government.

They also said that the prices of vegetables increased on the city markets over the week as heavy rain damaged many farmlands and disrupted supply.

The Department of Livestock Services on September 15 set the ‘reasonable prices’ for eggs, broiler chicken and Sonalika variety of chicken at Tk 11.87 apiece, Tk 179.59 a kilogram and Tk 269.64 a kilogram respectively.

Traders said that almost immediately after the official rate was set, the prices of eggs and chicken surged on the wholesale market.

The prices of eggs increased by Tk 5-7 a hali (four pieces) in the past three weeks and the item sold for Tk 57-60 a hali on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.

The price of broiler chicken increased by Tk 10 a kilogram over the week and the item sold for Tk 195–200 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 270–280 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The prices of some of the vegetables increased by Tk 10-20 a kilogram in the city over the week.

Aubergine sold for Tk 100-120 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 30–35 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 60-80 a kilogram, pointed guard for Tk 60-70 a kilogram and okra for Tk 70-80 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of green chillies increased by Tk 80-100 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 320-240 a kilogram in the city on the day.

Prices of potatoes remained high and the item sold for Tk 60 a kilogram on the city markets on Friday.

The prices of rice also remained high and coarse and medium-quality varieties of rice sold for Tk 54–60 a kilogram on Friday.

The price of lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 65-70 a kilogram over the week.

The fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 74–80 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80-85 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of onions also remained high and the local variety was sold for Tk 110-120 while the imported item sold for Tk 100 a kilogram on the day.
