First Measurable Snow On The Way In New York

Shawdesh desk:

Now that Fall is officially here in New York we all know what comes next, Winter and that means snow.

So when can we expect to see the first measurable snow of the year in New York?

Looking back at historical data, here are the average dates of the first measurable snowfall in New York State.

Buffalo – November 8th
Rochester – November 8th
Syracuse – November 6th
Binghamton – November 6th
Albany – November 16th
New York City – December 14th

Measurable snow is defined by the National Weather Service as 0.1 inch or more in a 24 hour period.

Of course, that isn’t the first time we will see some flakes in these areas. Usually, we will start to see snowflakes in October, but because they usually don’t stick or amount to much they don’t reach the “measurable” range.

All those cities mentioned above excluding New York City will once again be fighting for the “Golden Snowball”. It is given out to the city in New York that gets the most snow during the winter.

Last year Buffalo claimed the crown after getting hit with two massive storms in November and December.

Buffalo topped the list with 71.4 inches of snow, which was well below the normal average of 95.4 inches.

Syracuse was 2nd on the list with 60.8 and Rochester came in third with 52.5 inches. Both those totals were well below the yearly averages.
