Incessant rains hampers life of Dhaka dwellers

Torrential rainfall drenched the capital on Thursday, disrupting commute and the workday in general.

Office and school goers were seen suffering due to lack of transportation and slow traffic during the rain in the morning.

 

The rains, triggered by low pressure area over the West-central Bay and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal, started on Wednesday night and continued till Thursday noon.

Rains inundated lanes in different areas including Malibagh, Mouchak and Malibagh Chowdhury Para.

The Met office recorded 44 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours from 6:00am Wednesday till 6:00am Thursday while 43 mm of rainfall has been recorded in the past six hours from 6:00am to 12:00pm on Thursday, said meteorologist AKM Nzmul Haque.

However, there is a possibility of decrease in rainfall from Friday, he said.

According to the Met office regular bulletin, light to moderate rain or thundershower accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.

The country’s highest 104mm rainfall was recorded in Kumarkhali in 24 hours till 6:00am Thursday.

The axis of monsoon trough runs through India’s Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal to Assam across Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to North Bay.

Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate to strong over North Bay.

The low pressure area over West-central and adjoining Northwest Bay moved west-northwestwards has become unimportant and merged with the monsoon axis, it says.
