Man beaten to death at DU hall, sparked criticism

A man died early Thursday after being beaten allegedly by a group of students from Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at Dhaka University.

The deceased was identified as Tofazzal Hossain, 32.

The incident took place Wednesday night when students, suspecting Tofazzal of stealing mobile phones from their hall, detained him and beat him inside the dormitory.

Tofazzal was declared dead around 12:45 am, as per the medical report, said Dhaka University Proctor Mohammad Saifuddin Ahmed.

Tofazzal was confined at the hall, and in between the beatings, he was fed. Photos and videos of the incident went viral on social media.

On information, the proctorial team went to the spot and took Tofazzal to the Hospital for treatment. Later the doctors declared him dead.

Some DU students claimed that they knew Tofazzal. He is mentally unstable and is not a professional thief.

The DU Proctor said, “We are shocked about the incident. We already formed a seven-member probe body to look after the incident and asked to submit the probe report by this evening. The procedure of filing a case is going on.”
