New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a statement Saturday after former President Donald Trump was removed from the stage when gunshots rang out at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
“Any violence against a fellow American is disgusting and unacceptable. We must express political disagreements peacefully, civilly, and respectfully. I am praying for the safety and health of former President Trump and all who are attending this event in Pennsylvania,” Hochul said.
As Trump was displaying a chart of border crossing numbers, a loud noise pierced the crowd. Trump swiftly reached for his neck with his right hand, and there appeared to be blood on his face.
The Secret Service escorted Trump off the stage. In a statement, the agency said: “The former president is safe.”
Trump campaign officials also issued a statement.
“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow,” the statement read.
The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination , law enforcement officials said.
