The first session of the 12th National Parliament began around 3 pm with Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque in the chair and Shirin Sharmin was elected as speaker of the house at the beginning of the session.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader proposed Shirin Sharmin’s name as speaker while Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury supported it.
Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque declared Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury the winner by voice vote as there was no rival candidate in the post.
