Binodon Desk: A month-long fair featuring exquisite Jamdani saris will commence at Bengal Shilpalaya in Dhanmondi on September 6.

The event titled ‘Jamdani Festival 2019’ will feature stalls displaying Jamdani saris, seminar, photography exhibition and others, informed organisers at a press conference held at Bengal Boi in Lalmatia on Tuesday.

Bengal Foundation director general Luva Nahid Chowdhury gave the welcome speech at the press conference.

National Crafts Council of Bangladesh executive member Chandra Shekhar Shaha and its general secretary SK Saifur Rahman and others spoke at the programme.

The upcoming Jamdani festival will be jointly organised by National Crafts Council of Bangladesh (NCCB) and Bengal Foundation in association with Aarong, Kumudini, Tangail Saree Kutir and Aranya.

‘We have been preparing for the last two years for organising the festival. We want to promote Jamdani saris among the younger generation,’ said Luva Nahid Chowdhury.

‘Hand woven Jamdani saris are part of our rich heritage. The festival will feature 12 Adi Jamdani saris along with a total of 80 saris of different designs, participation of both seasoned and apprentice weavers, photography exhibition featuring 200 photographs and more. I wish the festival all the best,’ said Chandra Shekhar Saha.

Education minister Dipu Moni will be present as the chief guest, while state minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid, Nayaranganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, president of World Crafts Council-Asia Pacific region Dr Ghada Hijjawi Qaddumi and others will be present as special guests at the inaugural ceremony.

President of National Crafts Council of Bangladesh Rafiqul Islam will preside over the programme.
