India’s Harmanpreet escapes with fine of 75pc match-fees

Shawdesh Desk:

India women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur escaped with a fine of 75 per cent match fees despite smashing stumps during Saturday’s tied third one-day international against Bangladesh and then making controversial comments against umpires in the post-match presentation.

A Bangladesh Cricket Board official told New Age that Harmanpreet was fined 50 per cent of her match-fee for smashing stumps and 25 per cent for her words in the post-match presentation.

In addition to that, she was given four demerit points – three for breaking stumps and one for her words. No other Indian players were fined despite showing clear dissent against the decision of umpires during the match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The International Cricket Council is expected to announce the punishment in due course.

Harmanpreet took an unprecedented swipe at umpires after India were forced to concede a tie and ended the three-match series 1-1.

‘Even apart from the cricket, the type of umpiring that was happening there, we were very surprised,’ Harmanpreet said in the post-match presentation after third and final match of the series ended in a tie.

‘The next time whenever we are coming to Bangladesh, we’ll have to make sure we have to deal with this kind of umpiring and accordingly, we’ll have to prepare ourselves,’ she said.

India finished with 225 in 49.3 overs, replying Bangladesh’s 225-4 in the third match.

Harmanpreet smashed the stumps after being given out for 14 during the chase and later called the umpiring ‘pathetic.’

‘Some pathetic umpiring was done, and we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires,’ she said.

She was heard shouting ‘bring the umpires too,’ in the photo session after the match, in an apparent suggestion of considering umpires part of the Bangladesh team.

Bangladesh won the first match of the series by 40 runs before India levelled the series in the second match with a win by 108 runs.
