Three fresh cases filed, 49 more arrested in Panchagarh

Police on Tuesday said that three more cases were filed and 49 more people were arrested over the recent attacks on the Ahmadiyyas in Panchagarh.

With the latest arrested ones, the police have so far arrested a total of 130 people in a total of 10 cases filed over the attacks on the Ahmadiyyas.

Over 10,000 people, including several hundred named ones, were accused in the cases, the police said.

Panchagarh superintendent of police SM Sirajul Huda said that the people were arrested in different drives in different areas in the district.

He said that they were continuing drives to arrest the accused people.

Spokesman of the Ahmadiyyas, Ahmad Tabsir Chowdhury, said that they would file more cases in connection with the attacks.

Among the cases, eight were filed with Panchagarh Sadar police station while rest two were filed with Boda police station.

On March 3, two people were killed and dozens, including policemen, were injured while scores of houses of the Ahmadiyyas were torched and vandalised as Islamists clashed with police in Panchagarh over an annual congregation of the Ahmadiyyas.

The Ahmadiyyas alleged that over 150 houses were torched, and several hundred houses were looted and vandalised across five villages in Panchagarh during the clash.
