Shawdesh Desk: Two people were killed in Rangamati and a few others injured in landslides in Chattogram city on Saturday morning, triggered by heavy rainfalls.

Chandraghona police station officer-in-charge Ashfaq Uddin said that the landslide at Karigarpara in Rangamati upazila  buried two people at around 11:30am.

The deceased were identified as Atul Barua, 52, and Sulau Marma, 42.

According to local officials, at around 11:00am on Saturday, Atul and Sulau were travelling in a CNG auto-rickshaw on the Raikhali-Bangalhalia-Bandarban main road, when a landslide buried them at Karigarpara in Raikhali.

Rangamati Roads and Highways Department restricted heavy vehicles on the Rangamati-Khagrachhari road after a 10-15 feet portion of it caved in on Saturday morning in Manikchhari leaving no space for heavy vehicles to ply through.

Patenga Met Office’s assistant meteorologist Abdul Hannan said that 94.2 millilitres of rains were recorded in Chattogram from 12:00am to 9:00am Saturday.

Heavy thunder shower caused landslides at Arefin Nagar of Bayezid area, Kusumbag in Debarpar area and Lalkhan Bazaar area of Chattogram city on Saturday at around 11:00am, injuring four people.

Bayazid police station’s sub-inspector Emdadul Haque said that landslide in Arefin Nagar injured Shah Noor, 40, and her daughter Marjina, 18. They were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital soon after the police, army and locals managed to rescue them.

Khulshi thana’s SI Md Jahangir said that a part of the hill in Kusumbag area knocked down a tin-shed house. Fire service personnel rescued two persons, Nusrat, 3, and Rehana begum, 35, from the spot and sent them to the CMCH for primary treatment.

The shuttle train service was shut down in Chattogram on Saturday as the rain water flooded the Sholoshohor railway station.

Because of the downpour since Saturday morning most of the low-lying areas of Chattogram went under water. Rainwater submerged the roads through Prabartak intersection, Agrabad, CDA Residential Area, Muradpur, Katalganj, Sholoshohor, Bakalia, Halishahar, Mehedibag, etc.

Meanwhile, over 39 unions of nine upazilas in Chattogram were affectedby flash flood and onrush of hill water, said local sources.

In Rangunia upazila, flash flood inundated 20 villages of five unions, said upazila chairman Khalilur Rahman.

Downpour caused flood in many villages of Satkania, Lohagara, Patiya, Banskhali, Anowara, Chandanaish and Hathazari upazilas.

In Fatikchhari upazila, 30 villages of five unions are suffering due to flash flood resulting from damage of the Halda dam and torrents of water from hills.

Satkania upazila chairman Md Jashim Uddin said that nearly 50, 000 people of the upazila had been living a miserable life due to flood.

Already 700 people have been living in eight different shelters of Chattogram city since July 6.

The Chattogram civil surgeon office has, meanwhile, formed 284 medical teams for Chattogram district to combat any possible disaster that can be induced by heavy rains.

Apart from that, a round-the-clock control room has been set up at the civil surgeon office in order to provide any assistance. The phone number of the control room is 634843.

Chattogram civil surgeon Dr Azizur Rahman Siddique said that the medical teams were asked to remain on duty until further notice.

Each upazila would have five medical teams, while each union one. Each teams consisted of three to five healthcare activists.

The medical teams will provide emergency medical services. Besides, additional workforce has been kept standby at the Chittagong civil surgeon office to face any emergency.

There were also landslides at Shandip Para and Barkhola Para in Rangamati, resulting in a halt to road communication on the Rangamati-Bandarban road, the New Age correspondent in Rangamati reported.
